OUR GREEN PRACTICES

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Our vision and operating principles are based on the simple philosophy of setting a good example for others to follow. We believe in modeling sound sustainability practices daily to our children, employees, co-workers, and colleagues. Show them that you care and demonstrate that it’s doable, and many will follow your lead. We believe that change on a global scale cannot happen by fiat in a top-down way. It needs to be supported and adopted at a grass roots level in our homes, communities, and businesses, to a point where it becomes the norm. The key is to show that sustainable practices are not only good for the environment, but also good for the pocketbook and the bottom line. That is when we can achieve mass adoption and normalization of these practices, without interference from political controversy.

Our Achievements

Green Business

The San Rafael Airport has been recognized as a certified California Green Business.  The certification process requires the airport to meet stringent standards in the areas of water, energy, waste, recycling, supply chain management, and much more.

Developed a 5 year sustainability plan

In 2016 we participated in a 6 month intensive Sustainability Circle program with 7 other local Marin organizations.  We are currently implementing our 5 year plan which we project will result in electricity savings of 1.6 million kilowatt hours, 11,000 lbs of waste reduction, and 58,000 gallons of water reduction.

2017 Green Business of the Year

San Rafael Airport was named 2017 Green Business of the year by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of its green business initiatives as well as its leadership role in helping launch the first ever Marin County Sustainability Circle, which enabled 8 local Marin organizations to develop 5 year sustainability plans.

Largest Solar Facility in Marin

San Rafael Airport’s 1 megawatt rooftop solar farm has been powering hundreds of Marin homes and businesses since 2012, and was Marin Clean Energy’s first ever Feed In Tariff project.  In Fall 2018, an additional 1 megawatt will be added to the newly constructed airport community sports center.

MarinSEL Intern

As a part of our environmental initiative, we have taken on high school seniors as interns from the Marin School of Environmental Leadership (MSEL). The MSEL program is a magnet school within Terra Linda High School and focuses its students on an environmental lens. They implement many of their environmental studies through community action, and we are proud to be a supporter. So far we have had three interns and they learn on the job in practices like property management, data analysis, and research, all while helping us attain more sustainable practices.
